Drawing Tools and Media (DTM)

DTM:   SOLD

As a means of learning to draw, tools and media come in various types. You can use pencils made of graphite, colored pencils, pens, and crayons. Each tool and medium has its own characteristics. Here are some different types of drawing tools and media:

1. Pencils

Pencils are divided into two types: those marked with "H" and "B." H pencils are hard and suitable for making thin lines. B pencils are soft and suitable for making thick or dark lines. H and B pencils differ in terms of hardness and darkness. Pencils marked with a "B" become softer and darker as the number increases. Conversely, pencils marked with an "H" become harder and produce finer lines as the number increases.

2. Colored Pencils

Colored pencils come in a wide variety of colors and can produce soft tones. Students can use colored pencils for shading, applying colors gradually from dark to light or vice versa.

3. Crayons

Crayons come in two forms: pencil-shaped and block-shaped. Both types can be made of soft or hard materials. Soft crayons do not contain much oil and can be blended by hand. The colors produced by these two types of crayons can give a soft or bright impression.

4. Pens

Pens, besides being used for writing, can also be used for drawing. The drawings produced have strong character and are usually made with hatching techniques.

5. Drawing Paper

Drawing typically requires neutral-colored paper (white, gray, or brown) that can absorb or hold the pigments. Drawing paper, like Padalarang paper, can be used with various drawing tools. Pastels especially require paper with a slightly rough surface, such as cardboard.

Summary

Drawing is the foundation or core of fine arts. It is a mental and physical activity expressed through hand strokes using two- and three-dimensional media. Drawing involves imagination and feelings, using tools like pencils, pens, crayons, and other writing instruments.

Drawing objects can take the form of flora (plants), fauna (animals), or still life, whether they are man-made objects or natural objects. Drawing should begin with observing the object, arranging the composition, and then coloring the finished drawing.

The drawing process must follow the principles of fine arts in a clear, imaginative, creative, and enjoyable manner, while paying attention to artistic elements such as points, lines, colors, and planes. Additionally, the drawing should consider principles like proportion, composition, balance, texture, and light and dark contrast.

Reflection

Drawing themes such as flora, fauna, and still life can stimulate imagination and creativity. Drawing can also increase awareness of Indonesia’s rich natural diversity. Each region in Indonesia has a variety of flora and fauna that can serve as unique sources of inspiration. This natural wealth is a blessing from God that we must be grateful for.

Now that you understand the biodiversity not only serves as an inspiration for artistic creation but also provides economic prosperity for society, we have a responsibility to preserve flora and fauna to maintain a sustainable ecosystem.

Next Steps:

  • Reflect on your drawing experiences and write about an artist who specializes in still life drawing in Indonesia.
  • Include a photo of the artist along with your write-up on an A4 paper.
  • Provide feedback, criticism, and suggestions for improvement.
